Unpopular TD Facts

I have been into TD's for many years now. I've noticed a few things about them. These tend to be things that get censored in the forums. Things that some people just can't handle acknowledging. And things that are of great debate in some circles. Check back on this page, from time to time I'll add more scandalous facts. Some of them may save you some money/heartache.

  1. The A555 transmission SUCKS. Why, you ask? Let's start with 3rd gear deflection. What kind of bulletproof transmission ships with this kind of an oversight? But hey, that's repairable. So let's look at the real reason why I don't like the 555. It comes down to longevity. I'm not sure if it's the coarse cut gears, or a bad synchro design, but the transmissions end up grinding gears way too early in their lives. This doesn't seem to be an isolated incident, seems to be expected by most "in the know". This does not happen with the 520 and 523 transmissions, with their finer gears. There is a reason they don't just put coarse gears in all transmissions. 520's and 523's don't fail due to the way their gears are cut.
  2. You cannot turbo a 3.0 V6. I've seen it tried over and over again, it always ends in abysmal failure. Even when thousands of dollars are involved, it doesn't work. Don't bother.
